This manual is intended for educators, therapists, social workers, and others who work with children and animals and who need specific activities dealing with or about animals. This is the third manual in a series of manuals dealing with AAA and AAT and was developed due to the requests we have received for actual hands-on AAA and AAT projects.
Some of the activities also contain an educational or therapeutic component aside from also being something fun. Educational subjects covered are math, art, English, science, biology, and reading. Social skills covered deal with cooperation, self-awareness, peer pressure, self-esteem, and anger management. These activities can easily be modified to fit any teachable moment and the specific animals mentioned can also be switched to fit whatever animal population is available to the instructor. Not all of these activities require that a live animal be present; although, for some of the activities, one may find it more helpful and more enjoyable to have a live animal participate.
We would like to thank Barbara Rector and the Adventures in Awareness Program for the ability to adapt some of her program's components into smaller activities.
Please do not hesitate to contact one of us if you have any questions or need assistance on restructuring an activity to fit your particular needs. We hope you enjoy them and that you and your participants gain insight and appreciation for our animal kin.
