Animal-Assisted Therapeutic Interventions (based on DSM-IV)

This manual is intended for any professional who might partner with animals in the diagnosis, treatment, education, and support of individuals with mental health disabilities. Fourteen DSM-IV diagnoses were selected based on the authors' experiences as well as the ability for AAT to be of benefit. This is the fourth manual in a series of manuals dealing with AAA and AAT.

Aside from being therapeutic, some of the interventions also contain educational components, experiential opportunities, metaphorical learning, and fun, physical recreation.

These interventions can easily be modified to fit any teachable moment and the specific animals mentioned can also be switched to fit whatever animal population is available to the instructor, therapist, or educator.

Please do not hesitate to contact one of us if you have any questions, feedback, or need assistance on restructuring an intervention to fit your particular needs. We hope you enjoy this manual and that you and your participants gain insight and appreciation for our animal kin.
