However, with the new 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV and Pickup variants, Hummer owners can now take pride in their zero-emission vehicles while passing by traditional gas-guzzling hybrids.

Although it doesn’t have a traditional combustion engine, the new EV Pickup still maintains the bold, imposing, and excessive characteristics that make a Hummer a Hummer. Additionally, it is quite an amusing vehicle to drive.

Fascinating Exterior Design

The new 2024 GMC Hummer EV brings back the classic and recognizable design that made the H2 and H3 models iconic. The front fascia features the traditional slotted design. However, it has been updated with a modern touch, a connected light bar that creates a one-of-a-kind front profile.

Performance

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV will be available in two different motor configurations, each with three different power outputs. The base model, the Hummer EV EV2, will have two electric motors that produce 625 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque at the wheels, with a range of 250 miles.

The EV2x model will have the same power output but a longer range of over 300 miles. These models will not be available until Spring 2024 and 2023, respectively. The Edition 1, however, will have a tri-motor setup that produces 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

This model has a launch control mode called Watts To Freedom, which allows it to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. This model also has a towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

Driving experience

The Hummer offers a ride that is similar to a truck; however, the air suspension and positioning of the battery make it less inclined to lean while taking corners in comparison to any gas-powered pickup truck that has been driven.

Despite its size, the vehicle is extremely agile thanks to its four-wheel steering feature. The rear wheels can rotate up to 10 degrees, allowing the Hummer to navigate tight turns with ease.

This feature is particularly useful when changing lanes, as minimal steering input is required. It can take some time to get used to this sensation, but it never feels uncomfortable. The exceptional power output also plays a role in making the Hummer feel more manageable. With 1,000 horsepower available, the truck accelerates with ease, even at high speeds.

Efficiency

The GMC Hummer EV boasts an impressive range of 329 miles, thanks to its massive Ultium battery pack that includes 205 kWh of usable capacity. This is double the amount found in most other electric vehicles.

Despite its impressive range, the Hummer’s 9,063-pound weight makes it less efficient, with a combined rating of 47 MPGe. Charging the Hummer also takes a significant amount of time, with a 350 kW peak charging speed that still takes 45 minutes to go from 20 to 80 percent charge and 16.5 hours on a level 2 charger at home. It’s not recommended to charge the Hummer using a 110-volt outlet.

In this category, the most affordable contestants are the Chevrolet Colorado and the Ford Ranger.  However, the Ford Ranger pulls ahead because the price buys you a turbo-four, 270-horsepower engine that is far more capable than the Colorado’s standard four-cylinder.  Paying the same or less, the Ranger driver will have drivability, payload and tow ratings sewn up.  If you are looking at used trucks, keep in mind that this engine wasn’t standard before 2019. 

Cool Factor: Jeep Gladiator

Claiming cool, quite literally, the Jeep Gladiator offers an open-air ride like the Wrangler. The truck’s throwback look is exciting to some while others may dismiss it as working too hard.  Jeep’s rivals have been learning from the brand and have been trying to amp up their own cool factor. Ford has a Splash package that adds lots of color and style to the Ranger’s exterior.

Plus the Ranger engine is extremely competitive with the higher-priced engines on all of its rivals.  Then there’s the matter of Ford’s ten-speed automatic transmission.

Once again, the Ranger leads the category. Ford offers the entire Ford CoPilot360 package on the XL and makes it standard on the XLT.  While these types of systems are standard on the Honda Ridgeline, it costs more than the XLT, leaving Ford in the first place. The Gladiator and new Nissan Frontier are offering most of these crash avoidance features.  However, GMC and Chevrolet trucks do not have modern crash avoidance systems except on the highest trims, and they lack the full package even at that level.

The new Ford Maverick is a compact truck that earns up to 40 miles per gallon thanks to its hybrid drivetrain.  Behind that, the Canyon and Chevrolet offer a diesel with better overall highway fuel economy (30 mpg) than any gas-powered midsize trucks.  Yet, the Ford Ranger entry-level truck earns 21 MPG city while the GM diesel earns only 20 MPG city.  Furthermore, the Ford leads the gas-powered midsize class with 26 miles per gallon on the highway. Furthermore, it only needs regular gas unlike the GM trucks which need much pricier diesel.

All in all, the midsize contest currently comes down to the Jeep Gladiator versus the Ford Ranger. However, the Ford offers to save about $9,000 at the entry-level mark, has better horsepower and torque, and promises lower fuel costs while managing to meet most of Jeep’s off-roading challenges. At this point in the midsize truck contest, it would seem that Ford was winning.
