In this case, Toyota is ready to tackle the event with the all-new 86 model, recently launched in the virtual world.

Everybody knows that the Japanese carmaker has rethought its strategy concerning the Scion brand, the company reducing the lineup and introducing just a bunch of models in the near future. The 86 is no other than the facelift version of the recently dropped GT86 model.

Except for the engine under the hood, the 2016 86 has little in common with the previous GT86, the model being no less than just a modern and aggressive car with few GT design cues.

Thus, the new 86 looks hot with the new and wider center intake, revised LED front headlamps and turn signals, updated rear bumper or LED taillights.

The cabin is also reconfigured with the “Grandlux” high-end materials on the instrument panel surround, silver stitching on the seats and sport steering with integrated audio controls.

Under the hood, the 2016 Toyota 86 packs the same engine but adds 5 horsepower, reaching a total of 205 horsepower. It is not much and some might think this is a real pathetic and insulting situation. Perhaps the performance figures might prove them wrong. We will find out more next week in New York.

The first Scion Concept present at the event will be the Scion x Riley Hawk Skate Tour xB, designed entirely by Scott Kanemura of KMA Production, taking its inspiration from famous skateboarder Riley Hawk.

The model will come with a lot of visual features, while inside it will sport a lot of high-tech goodies, like an 8-track player, rear facing monitor for media playback, an exquisite Pioneer sound system, dual motion table sliding and other cool tweaks.

The second Concept launched will come in the shape of the Scion FR-S T1, created by Jeremy Lookofsky from Cartel Customs, wrapped in an Azzuro California Blue and targa top with black.

Finally, the third model will be the Scion x Slayer Mobile AMP tC, specially designed by Mike Vu from MV DESIGNZ.

The model is coming with a custom body finish, suicide doors, spike style center caps, the same high-tech Pioneer sound system with a 32-inch monitor and more.

The Scion FR-S Series 1.0 was first unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show, back in April, a concept that has been produced in order the revive the lineup set for the North America.

The model is coming tweaked with a lot of visual goodies developed by the Toyota Racing Development division and consists of a more aerodynamic body kit with side fender garnish, changed rear spoiler with four exhaust tips, as well as a lowered suspension.

The exterior is also wrapped in a Yuzu finish, the model additionally sporting HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights at the front.

Inside, the cabin of the Scion FR-S Series 1.0 is tweaked with a sporty TRD steering and shift knob, black seats, bespoke cargo mat, as well as a badge with the series number.

The body of the 2015 Scion FR-S is also tweaked with standard headlights, along with some performance features like a more rigid suspension, and some fresh new shock absorbers at the rear, for better handling.

Inside, the 2015 Scion FR-S comes with a carbon fiber dashboard, a different key design and other minor tweaks as well.

The 2015 Scion FR-S will be available at its dealerships starting June with prices to start from 24,900 USD for the manual version, while the automatic comes from 26,000 USD.

They’ve hardly taken delivery of what’s the sportiest cheap car out there and it seems like it’s starting to feel about as much as it costs.

The clever adaptive ECU they’ve used in the engine may not be as clever as it sounds since it can cause rough idling and stalling.

This is probably one of the worst ways the ECU can work over your car and it’s also pretty risky in terms of safety.

Subaru and Scion aren’t joking around, they’re aware of the problem and want to help out the customers as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the fix they have ready so far isn’t the most impressive one around. All the Japanese car makers are offering is an ECU reflash.

This is a temporary solution and pretty much gives you a break from the problem, until whatever made it happen in the first place will make it happen again.

Scion are a bit more generous and they claim that folks with less than 100 miles on the clock can actually get the chip replaced altogether.

Subaru (who’ve actually made the engine) claim that this isn’t necessary and will wait for a more competent solution to be made available.

In the meantime there’s a bunch of unhappy customers out there for each of these car makers and there’s a bit of unrest among the people who have their cars about to be delivered.

The new model sports a special Absolutely Red exterior finish with new 18-inch alloy wheels in a black finish, side skirts, front and rear aprons and a rear spoiler.

Under the bonnet we find a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine capable to deliver 180hp and 173 lb-ft of torque.

A sports exhaust system along with a revised suspension which features high-performance springs is available as well.

Entering the cabin you will find a numbered plaque, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, black seats with red stitching and a revised steering wheel.

Scion prices the new tC RS 8.0 at $21,815 (excluding the $730 delivery fee). Opting for the six-speed automatic transmission, the price rises to $22,865.

The company also released a presentation video for the new tC RS 8.0, a film which will let you get a closer look at the new special edition.

Under the bonnet sits a powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine capable to deliver 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque.

The new Subaru BRZ, I mean the Scion FR-S, is equipped with a standard six-speed manual transmission and starts at $24,200. If you want to benefit from a six-speed automatic gearbox, you will have to add extra $1,100.

“Scion is thrilled that the FR-S is now available throughout its strong network of about 1,000 dealers. We can’t wait for performance driving enthusiasts to get into the FR-S because we know that they are going to love it,” says Scion.

If the fuel consumption is important to you, the company says that the 2013 FR-S returns EPA-estimated figures of 30mpg highway (manual) and 34mpg highway (automatic).

You will also have to add a $730 destination and handling fee in order to obtain the correct price tag.

Scion is the first to announce the brand new model. It’s not really their FR-S version of the coupe we’re talking about but a new one. Really, we are.

It’s an open top version of the FR-S which is so far only known as the “cabrio” or “convertible” and its likely to be just as big a hit as the “original”.

Why? Simply because there’s a lot of people there who appreciate the idea of a roadster more than the idea of a sporty coupe.

With the convertible Scion FR-S we’re looking at a relatively soon coming debut, the year 2014 being ever so often mentioned around the idea.

Late 2013 has also been thrown around, maybe at least for the order accepting part of the introduction of the new model.

Either way, the most important bit to know about the Scion FR-S convertible is that it’s going to be a proper sports car, not just a blue sky cruiser.

According to several quotes from both Toyota and Subaru, the drop top version was developed alongside the original car so it’s not going to flex about like a sauced up sandwich.

Otherwise we’re looking at the same 2.0 liter naturally-aspirated 4 cylinder horizontally opposed engine with a Toyota’s D-4S injection system to power it.

None of the rest of the underpinnings would have been expected to get changed either. At the most, the suspension would get a new setup but that’s about it.

Toyota’s entry level brand for the young will soon kill off two of their models, the xD and the xB.

Whereas the xD was not a commercial success the xB simply was the product that made the Scion brand stand out. And it’s soon going to be gone.

Though we may mourn it, the truth is that this isn’t a surprise move from the Toyota subsidiary. This had been planned all along.

Ever since the company was put together, Toyota announced that Scion’s product strategy would be fairly simple.

Using a marketing slogan which presented itself as “one and gone”, Scion would make one model, run it for whatever its designated lifespan was and then can it in preparation for a new model.

We’re not saying that both the xD and xB are opening the way for some serious FR-S presence but the numbers do add up.

Just recently Scion announced that they plan to sell some 20.000 units of the FR-S each year. That’s ambitious, even at the low cost they’re selling it.

As for the xB, it’s going but it’s only doing so at the right time. Last year’s sales of this model were rather poor in comparison to other similar periods.

In 2011, only 17.000 people expressed interest in the Scion xB which is far less than the maximum of 60.000 customers that once took one home.

Each of these companies have told us what they plan to do with their future lineup and the news are good and bad at the same time.

Scion fans are disappointed, Subaru ones are going to be more thrilled but it’s the sport car fans that really win.

Allow me to explain. The Scion FR-S has now been polished up and given the final go-over before hitting the market.

It truly is a what you see is what you get sort of vehicle since they’ve just announced that apart from the versions that arrive on launch day, we’re not going to see more versions.

No turbocharger, no four wheel drive and no bigger engines are going into the Scion arm of the Toyobaru coupe. Over in the Subaru camp, things are a little different.

The Scooby will likely get the turbo but that may be subject to a few market limitations. Basically, if they develop a turbo version, Toyota and Subaru are going to splint the markets in which they sell them.

Turbo or not, both the Subaru BRZ ans Scion FR-S keep racking up orders like there’s no tomorrow. After all, why shouldn’t it?

That 2.0 liter boxer engine, the lightweight construction and the enthusiast oriented production ideology don’t have the makings of a failed model.
