What a difference a couple of decades can make. While the innovators at Honda and Toyota have dragged electric vehicles into the mainstream, the luxury car makers are keen to get a piece of the action. Anyone who’s anyone wants a Tesla, and now one of the most traditional names from Colonial England is getting in on the act.

Electric Bentley unveiled at Geneva

It wasn’t long ago that you might have assumed the only way to run a Bentley without gallon upon gallon of gas would be to hook it up to the horses, not the electricity supply. But this year, the manufacturer unveiled its Bentayga PHEV at the Geneva Motor Show. Orders are already being taken in the European market, meaning those wealthy land owners can at last restrict their equine needs to using their bookmaker promo codes at the local racecourse.

The Bentayga is being hailed by the company as: “the world’s first luxury hybrid.” Quite what Porsche and Audi think of that statement is not known, but as these are all sister companies, the chances are they see Bentley as the eccentric family member whose outrageous claims are to be quietly tolerated.

Either way, the Bentayga hybrid is in no way a compromise. It looks and feels all Bentley, both inside and out, with the usual list of options and extras that discerning drivers have come to expect. The charging port itself is cleverly concealed behind what looks like a duplicate fuel flap on the opposite side to the gas filler.

Just the beginning

Of course, creating an electric version of an existing vehicle in the model range is one thing, and Bentley was certainly not the only manufacturer to showcase such a car at Geneva. However, the company from Crewe, England, has far more ambitious plans.

For one thing, it has announced that every vehicle in its range will be available with an electric powertrain by 2025. Even more exiting, though, is that plans are on the drawing board to develop a pure EV from scratch, designed around the principles and needs of EV technology.

This is a brave step to be taking for such a traditional company, and demonstrates their seriousness about developing their brand image to be more than English opulence and all about technical excellence and innovation.

Bentley’s Design Director, Stefan Sielaff, told the UK motoring press: “A full electric Bentley is something I am extremely convinced we have to do.” He went on to explain that the next step will be to design a new and unique Bentley, that will be unlike any existing car.

He said:
“It gives us a great chance to establish a completely new design language for the company.”

Sielaff has ruled out a two-seater and has suggested that the new design will be something low, sleek, sporty and elegant. To students of automotive history, this will sound strangely familiar, and in some ways the new EV technology is serving to take Bentley right back to its roots.

It is bigger, lower and wider, yet classy and beautiful. A real contender for the likes from Aston Martin DB11 Volante or 2019 BMW 8-Series. In fact, so it should have been, as it deserves the best appreciations.

Even if at the beginnings, the engineers have had rough times finding a way out to perfectly fit the folding canvas roof into the car`s lower design, they have surely managed to do that by lowering its front and rear, while the side now comes with tell-tale Continental rear haunch.

Even if the model has a couple of things in common with other models within the Volkswagen Group – it shares the same MSB platform with the new Porsche Panamera – most of its parts are genuinely Bentley – around 82 percent.

Also, compared with its coupe sibling, the new Bentley Continental GTC is a bit heavier than the standard model, meaning that it is slower from the 0 to 100 km/h. While we`re at it, the same 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 TSI engine will be fit underneath, developing rather the same power – 635 PS and 900 km/h. That means that the sprint is done in around 0.2 seconds more than the coupe`s 3.7 seconds.

On top of that, it also uses a dual-clutch transmission working in tandem with an active all-wheel drive system and the so acclaimed 48-volt Dynamic Ride System.

Bulgaria has decided to track down all luxury car owners and investigate the means by which they acquired certain vehicles. The car brands that the authorities in Bulgaria seem to be targeting are: Maybach, Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and Ferrari. The choice seems interesting as there are quite a couple of brands that produce luxury vehicles that seem to have been omitted. Could there be an explanation, other than the fact that these brands are the most expensive at this point, for the selection of these particular brands?

Government officials in Bulgaria do not consider that owners of these particular car brands are guilty. They suspect some are, which is why a serious investigation has to be conducted. Whether or not this action will prove successful, is something we will have to see. The investigation will also be extended to owners of expensive properties. This seems to be quite a big effort in an attempt to eradicate corruption and punish those that have been constantly breaking the law. The initiative is grand and should be adopted by many other countries in an international attempt to create more law abiding societies.

This particular situation seems to have caught the attention of the authorities on account of the general low income in Bulgaria, which, in most cases, would prove unfit for the ownership of luxury vehicles. The authorities will basically ask each owner of luxury vehicles to prove that the money used for the purchase was acquired legally. No word has been said on the sanctions and punishments that will be put in action in the case of those individuals that will fail to show the way in which they came into position of the needed large sums of money for purchasing such vehicles.

No matter how you look at it, Bulgaria seems ready to reduce corruption and punish those responsible for tax evasion and money laundering. The idea will most definitely prove to be an inspired one, as the authorities will most likely gain the support of most people, as well. What remains to be seen is if this particular idea will also spread to other countries. At this point fighting corruption is not a collective effort, which is why results are not often as good as we’d hope.

While the Bentley Bentayga by Mulliner was called the “ultimate luxury SUV”, the Bentley Mulliner Hallmark Series is considered the most luxurious model that wears the coachbuilder`s signature.

The car`s main highlights represent the silver and carat-gold-plated “Flying B” logo, with silver and gold metallic lining inside the cabin for the storage compartments, painted veneer as well as metal veneer inlay.

The exterior looks gorgeous with the choice of single-tone or dual-tone paintjobs, adding as well the retractable “Flying B” logo with the “Commissioned” engraving on one side and “By Mulliner” on the other side. Until then, the SUV`s expansion seems to comprise a limited-run edition of the high-end model, called the Bentley Bentayga Mulliner, recently unveiled ahead the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, which opens its gates next week.

The luxurious variant of the present Bentayga is called the “ultimate luxury SUV” and will be built in a very limited-run edition, to the long-lasting handcrafted process for its interior. This makes it extremely luxurious both at the exterior as well as inside.

At the outside, the Bentayga Mulliner is highlighted by the two-tone paintjob, body-coloured lower bodywork, bright chromed lower bumper grilles and one-off 22-inch alloy wheels. The cabin is what sets this particular model apart the standard one.

We are looking here at a plethora of interior features, referring to the high-quality materials and the latest technology available right now.

The cabin welcomes with Mulliner characteristics, with different color on the rear seats, stitched leather upholstery, unique embroidery, contrast stitching, new Ombre Burr Walnut Veneer with wood transition from black to Burr Walnut, and so on.

Other features also include the gadgetries – 20-speaker system with a 1,950-watt and 21-channel amplifier, which is believed to be the “highest quality video system in the class”, illuminated Mulliner tread plates, Mulliner bottle cooler integrated in the rear center console, custom Cumbria Crystal flutes and so on.

In the engine department, the Bentley Bentayga Mulliner comes with the same 6.0-liter W12 engine, with 600 horsepower and whopping 900 Nm of torque, allowing an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.0 seconds, at a top speed of 301 km/h.

The model will be displayed at the Bentley`s special stand at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

However, according to new reports and hints from company representatives, it seems that the new SUV is set to arrive by 2020 in the form of an all-electric car.

In a recent report to Automotive News, Wolfgang Durheimer, CEO at Bentley, has declared that the company is indeed planning a new model to the future lineup.

More than that, there were also confirmations that the model would be all-electric vehicle. Here is what Rolf French, Chief engineer for Bentley, has recently stated:

“If you are looking for such a car [small SUV] then we are looking to that in combination with the possibilities to go full electric, it only makes sense if you get really new customers into the brand.”

As you already probably know, the Bentley Bentayga stands on the Volkswagen`s new MLB platform, also underpinning other models withing the Group, like the new Audi Q7, Volkswagen Touareg or Lamborghini Urus. However, since we are looking at a smaller SUV, the new all-electric variant will sit on the same electric platform as the new Audi Q6.

The company`s new model range will also comprise the future Continental range with the GT and Flying Spur, as well as plug-in hybrid variants, arriving a little bit earlier than the new smaller electric Bentayga SUV.

As opposed to the ongoing models, the list of mods for the new Continental GT and GTC will not be significant, the only difference being the new MSB platform that the latter will be standing on.

We are dealing here with the Volkswagen Group`s new MSB architecture, also underpinning other models within the group, like the upcoming Porsche Panamera. This means significant weight loss – around 150 kg – thanks to the new aluminum composites, which will increase the cars` space inside and performance under the hood.

Visually, the 2018 Bentley Continental GT and GTC will receive minor changes, meaning new front grille and air intakes, as well as fresh headlights and LED taillights.

In the engine department, the new GT and GTC will come with the same 4.0-liter V8, borrowed from the Panamera, adding a smaller displacement later on, fitted on the entry-level variants. This one refers to a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 mill. The performance figures are not known at the moment.

As we can see in the video, both versions are wearing extensive camouflage, which indicates some major transformations at the front and rear end. Both prototypes and future production models are influenced by the EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept, revealed a long time ago.

Up front, the new Continental GT and GTC might come in the final version with massive circular headlights and smaller lights near the fenders, adding smaller front and rear fenders as well, which are exactly the opposite of those exposed here. Also, the rear end might finally come with integrated oval tailpipes in the fascia.

The 2018 Bentley Contintal GT / GTC will stand on the company`s new MSB platform, which is the very same also underpinning the Porsche Panamera. This means that it will allow sharing some of the latter`s engines.

We should be seeing an interesting lineup, comprising a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 541 horsepower and 770 Nm of torque, followed as well by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 2.9-liter V6 engine and an electric motor, churning out a total of 462 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Bentley is also preparing a top of the line 6.0-liter biturbo W12 engine, with 600 horsepower on-board and whopping 900 Nm of torque, the same one found on the Bentley Bentayga SUV.

Rumors state that the GT will arrive next year, while for the GTC we will have to wait until 2018. Expect fresh details next year.
