The first time the Daihatsu was previewed, was some time ago in 2013, when the vehicle was seen at the Tokyo Motor Show. The rendered pics conclude that the Copen is coming.

The 2015 Copen is said to be comfortable, cheap and light due to its composite body, manufactured from removable “thirteen outer plates”, giving its customers the change of customizing the exterior.

The 2015 Daihatsu Copen will also enhance an electric power roof and a D-Frame skeletal structure which makes the car stronger and stiffer than the previous model.

Under the hood, the 2015 Daihatsu Copen will come with a 660cc turbocharged engine, developing a standard 64 horsepower and 92 Nm of torque.

The 2015 Daihatsu Copen will also sport a five-speed manual transmission or an optional CVT one. Except for these info rendered here, more will be known at the moment of its debut, which might be soon.

While other car maker struggle with new design features that bring the promise of a fresh look over the whole vehicle range, some concentrate on the future.

Daihatsu, for one, was present with a very nice concept sporting a clean drive solution, and they chose the Tokyo Auto Show to present their product.

Daihatsu FC Deco Deck

Called the FC Deco Deck, this cute little vehicle is classified and built as a “zero-emission next generation mobility vehicle”. This is despite the truck-like overall shape. The key feature of this concept is not the fun design, but rather the unique motor.

Daihatsu FC Deco Deck

Using a new technology developed by Daihatsu, the motor uses precious metal free liquid fuel cells, that not only work, but the car maker also promises to be repurposed for use in future low-cost vehicles. While that day is quite a while off, we do have the Daihatsu FC Deco Deck today, and two more power solutions alongside it.

As the headline has it, the Daihatsu Copen will soon leave production and that’s rather saddening because it’s a very likable car.

The Daihatsu Copen is pretty much the smallest and cheapest option in terms of a Japanese sports car. Also, it’s a coupe-cabriolet job.

Daihatsu Copen

There’s actually a more important category the Daihatsu Copen can be labeled under. It is the last of the kei cars.

For those unfamiliar with the term, that is a special category of cars that originate from Japan.

These are genuinely very small cars, featuring similar dimensions to the ones on the Copen. The Daihatsu Copen was powered by a 1.3 liter turbocharged four pot developing only 87 horsepower.

Daihatsu Copen

So how is a car that’s so small and has such an unimpressive engine interesting? Well, despite the roof arrangement, it’s still a very light car.

Lightness makes great bed fellows with small power but there’s more. Daihatsu put some proper thought into the way the Copen is layed out and drives.

It’s actually a fun to drive car and it’s a very pleasant place to be. Not because of the interior or the space. Driving such a small car creates a very special experience of joy and uncertainty, especially when surrounded by cars that are enormous.

Daihatsu Copen

Stuff like the VW Golf and Ford Focus can really freak you out and thrill you at the same time. The Daihatsu Copen is such a fun car that even the guys at Top Gear like it.

Sadly, after they sort out a final limited edition of 500 units the Daihatsu Copen will exist no more.

Daihatsu Motor is the oldest Japanese car manufacturer being founded in 1907 and is well known for its off-road vehicles. This time, Daihatsu is going to reveal a futuristic concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, a small model called Pico. The new Daihatsu Pico is an electric vehicle concept powered by an electric motor for zero-emission travelling.

According to the company, the lithium-ion battery pack can be charged in just 2 hours and offers a driving range of 50 kilometers at speeds up to 30 km/h. The Pico concept weighs just 400 kilograms due to its small dimensions of 2,4 meters long, 1,0 meters wide and 1,5 meters tall.

The main reasons which make the Japanese people from Daihatsu to quit the European market starting 2013 are the poor financial situation together with poor sales amount. Back in 2009, Toyota announced that the Japanese subsidiary managed to sell about 36,000 vehicles in Europe, not very optimistic indeed.

Daihatsu

Another decisive reason which weighs a lot is the bad trend of the currency between yen and euro but also the EU reglementations in terms of safety and CO2 emissions, a chapter where Daihatsu can’t boast too much. It seems that in 51 years, as Daihatsu entered the European market in 1960, they really didn’t manage to break the ice, mainly considering that last year the sales droped even more compared to 2009, only 19,300 vehicles being sold by the Japaneses.

However, there are two more years since 2013 when the Japanese company will completely quit the European market, thus, this comes as a warning signal but however the chances of recover are small for Daihatsu.
