Petrolhead, Australia. I don’t know if a city like this actually exists or not but if it did, a local holiday would be brewing about now.

Why? Well because after countless rumors and warnings about the production of the Joss JP1, Australia’s first supercar was unveiled today.

Joss JP1

With the unveiling of the final aspect of the JP1, Joss Developments Limited gave us some official details on their Aussie monster.

The final aspect of the Joss JP1 is still rather bland and boring but then again, the prototypes we’ve seen before revealed most of the shape as being like that.

As far as we can tell all that god changed is in the details of how the Joss JP1 looks. To be honest, the Australians, just as the supercar fans won’t be that interested in the looks.

Joss JP1

The performance is where it counts and on that front the Joss JP1 is even better than rumors and initial forecasts would have us believe.

Courtesy of a 6.6 liter aluminium V8 engine that develops some considerable oomph at 500 horsepower and a world of torque and a special gearbox this is a remarkably fast road car.

The gearbox I’m talking about is an Albins Zeroshift Automated Manual Transmission and while we have no actual information on the sort of smoothness and precision at hand it can manage the engine’s power quite well.

Joss JP1

Acceleration from 0 to 62 is dealt with in what’s defined as a less than 3 second time and 0 to 100 mph takes precisely 6.0 seconds.

That is impressive, no doubt it is, but the top speed figure is even more so because it is rated at 224 mph, 12 mph more than the Australians initially declared.

So let’s sum up. So far, the Australian Joss JP1 has a lot of power, it can handle it and it can do so at an immense pace.

Joss JP1

Further details and better shots will be available once we get some feedback on the Melbourne Motor Show, as that’s where Joss will show the JP1 to the public in the flesh.

The only slight problem with the Joss Developments Limited’s road going creation is how it will cost half a million Australian dollars to buy (roughly 526.000 USD).

This is what will most likely dent its international appeal but on the bright side it will be very tempting on the Australian market as because of high taxes European supercars end up costing a lot more than in other places.

The supercar game is very difficult to get into, even if you’re a company with great success on the racetracks around the world.

Nobody proves this better than Joss who, in making their JP1, have had years go by to reach today’s point where just a few hurdles stand between them and production of their vehicle.

Joss JP1

Like plenty others before them the Melbourne based company plans to make the Joss JP1 a supercar that only shines through performance and handling.

Needless to say, this doesn’t mean that the Joss JP1 is ugly, unusable, uncomfortable or has a shoddy interior. It is just that in just about all of these aspects, the best you can say about the JP1 is that it is easily digestible.

Slightly bland if anything, the design the Australians employed is focused on lowering the aerodynamic drag generated by the body while still having sufficient downforce and stability at the high speeds the car can reach.

Joss JP1

Where the Joss JP1 really shines is under the visible aspects. This is where you’ll find a mid-mounted engine of a generous 6.8 liter capacity, made entirely out of aluminium and laid out in a V8 shape.

The 440 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque it develops in the Joss JP1 get sent toward the rear wheels via a Porsche originated five speed manual gearbox.

In a world where cars have seven, eight or more ratios in their gearbox, this seems like it may be a poor choice to have such a setup this close to production.

Joss JP1

When they actually get round to making it, the gearbox will be swapped for a more capable six speed manual and the engine will be retuned to around 500 horsepower.

Based on stats from the prototype of the Joss JP1, the final product weighs in at just 2.072 pounds, has a sub 3 second 0 to 62 time and a top speed figures goes as far as 211 mph.

How can that not be interesting? The Joss badge may not mean a lot to snobs but there’s still a lot of appeal to be found within the JP1.

Joss JP1

As for actual production procedures, the final steps Joss Developments have got to go through are some wind tunnel tests on the production JP1 and selection of various components from its technical partners.

It all sounds pretty good however there is a bit of a downside where the price for the Joss JP1 supercar is said to be somewhere in the half a million Australian dollars ballpark.

All we can hope now is that we don’t have to wait another year in the “close to production” category.

Since the Australians over at Joss have announced that they reached an agreement with a supplier for a gearbox and drive system, this being pretty much the final piece of the jigsaw production of the JP1 supercar is expected to begin soon.

Joss Supercar

No actual dates of production or delivery have been published by the first Australian dedicated supercar maker but the name of supplier has been made available.

The Joss supercar will be equipped with a gearbox supplied by Albins that can handle high power and torque outputs, as well as having a form that can be used for competition. But where is this torque going to come out from? Well, the car is said to have a V8 engine that delivers over 500 brake horsepower but weirdly, in the most recent announcement the engine supplier hasn’t been named. I wonder who it might be?

When it does actually start, the first batch of production will be limited to 25 units. There are also plans to join GT racing events and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While I’m not sure how it would work as a road legal supercar which would have to manage with some degree of user friendliness, I’m pretty much certain the Joss JP1 will be a killer on the racetracks.

The JP1 has already made appearances in Xbox games Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport.
