DS Automobiles has taken the wraps off the No. 7, the model now stepping in for the DS 7, once known as France’s former presidential car. For DS, the launch comes at a useful time, as it faced a lot of challenges in 2025, with the outgoing DS7 sales dropping by roughly 24%, meaning around 14,000 units sold.

Now, it seems that their model is making a comeback as a premium French SUV, aimed to rival the likes of the X1 from BMW or Mercedes-Benz`s new GLA; and that`s because of new features that the French carmaker is putting into the SUV: long range, tech-heavy cabin, and exterior new design lines. Thus, the company is clearly hoping this new “First Class” SUV can do what the No. 8 and No. 4 could not.

The car`s design traces back to the concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2020, with DS pointing to the roofline in particular, which flows into a spoiler above the tailgate. There are also rounded surfaces and a standout shoulder line that really highlight the car`s new personality.

DS No. 7

As for exterior paint jobs, the No.7 can be had with a choice of six colors, like Silk Green, Palladium Grey, Alabaster White, Topas Blue, Perla Nera Black, and Crystal Pearl. As for wheels, sizes are available up to 21 inches.

The electric range is broad. The front-wheel-drive Long Range version uses a single motor delivering 242 horsepower (245 metric horsepower), or 276 horsepower (280 with Boost), and pairs it with a 97.2-kWh battery pack built in northern France. Installed in the floor, it preserves legroom and allows up to 460 miles (740 kilometers) of range. The all-wheel-drive Long Range model raises output to 345 horsepower (350 metric horsepower), or 370 horsepower (375 metric horsepower) with Boost, while range stands at 422 miles (679 kilometers). It also covers 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 5.4 seconds. Another version, the FWD E-Tense, uses a 73.7-kWh battery, returns 337 miles (543 kilometers), and produces 227 horsepower (230 metric horsepower) or 256 horsepower (260 metric horsepower) with Boost engaged.

DS No. 7

Then there is the equipment list. The active suspension reads the road with a windshield-mounted camera and adjusts each shock absorber through a motorized solenoid valve within milliseconds. DS PIXELVISION combines adaptive headlights, pivoting main beams, cornering lighting, and glare-free high beams, with a reach of 400 meters (1,312 feet). Add level 2 driver assistance, night vision, a digital rearview mirror, a head-up display, the Neck Warmer, and Focal’s Electra 3D audio system with 14 speakers and a 690-Watt amplifier, and the No. 7 does not exactly arrive empty-handed. Order books are already open, with the first version offered being the E-Tense with 230 horsepower at 64,200 euros, or $74,075.

Volkswagen Group has launched an all-encompassing new cost-cutting plan, which will determine the workings of the German automaker in the coming 3 years. The company said in a closed-door briefing attended by CEO Oliver Blume and CFO Arno Antlitz that it had a goal of cutting operating expenses by 20 percent in 2028. The announcement was hastened due to a series of reports in the German press that indicated that the group is preparing to face an even more hostile global environment due to the declining demand in China, the tariff-heavy U.S. market during the previous Trump administration, and an increasingly competitive environment.

Although the steps to be implemented are a secret, insiders in the industry indicate that the strategy might entail closing down some manufacturing facilities to simplify the organization. The strategy will be pegged to the fine in terms of maintaining the fundamental strengths of the diverse portfolio of the group, Blume, who will elaborate on how it will be executed at the March 10 conference, where the 2025 financial results will be announced, hinted. An official of the Volkswagen Group has remarked that this new program will be based on the huge savings that have already been realized by the group with the operational plan that was launched three years ago, which has resulted in tens of billions of euros of savings in all brands and subsidiaries.

Taking place in the context of declining margins and a fast-changing car industry, the choice of Volkswagen is an indication of why the group had to tighten its belt and remain one of the world leaders. The market watchers will be following keenly on the manner in which the cost-cutting push will be implemented within the next few years and whether the initiative will eventually remake the imprint of the group both in Europe and elsewhere.

November 15, 2025 – Saarlouis, Germany – Ford Motor Company had said in a muted announcement that seemed more a farewell kiss to a long-term friend than a press release that the final of its legendary compact car, the Ford Focus, was coming off the assembly line at its factory in Saarlouis today. The small yet popular model shall never again be produced after almost thirty years in the business, leaving a gap in the European market that the Blue Oval has not successfully occupied.

A Final Assembly Line

The German factory that has been synonymous with the Focus for years watched the final car leave the line before the doors were shut and the lights were dimmed.

“Today, we close a chapter that began in 1998 and wrote a story of innovation, reliability, and European style,” said a Ford spokesperson at the plant. “While we’re excited about the future of electrification, we’re also proud of the legacy the Focus has left behind.”

Why the End?

In 2022, production of the Ford Focus was announced to be discontinued. Why? Because as part of a broader strategic shift towards electric vehicles, particularly crossovers and SUVs. The small car, which was a staple in Europe, no longer competes with the influx of EVs and bigger SUVs.

Worse still, to the local labor force, the Saarlouis facility is empty. Ford has offered the facility on the market without getting a buyer. It is unclear what will happen to the plant, as it may turn into a new EV hub, or it may be sold to another car manufacturer.

The Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) reported that the market position of Ford dropped drastically in the year 2024. The Ford Motor Company lost its position in second place to twelfth, eliminating the market share it had gained 10 years before. In 2015, Ford was the second-largest automotive manufacturer in Europe, and this position has been difficult to hold in the fast-changing industry.

In spite of the fact that the Ford Focus is not produced any longer, Ford has implied that it will have a vehicle that will indirectly substitute it. In 2027, the new small SUV model will be unveiled, which is in reference to the brand being more electrified with the crossovers. It does not have a direct spiritual succession, yet this new model is supposed to take back the compact-segment market with the modern, electric-friendly design.

According to one of the design heads of Ford:

The company is ever-evolving, and future generations of cars will capture the progressing needs of drivers all over the world. Our next mini SUV will introduce the traditions of the brand of quality and innovation into the electrification age.

To the average European motorist, the Ford Focus was not just a car, it was a friend that was there with them every day, that was practical, and that was at the same time a Ford. The Focus was also renowned for being safe and affordable, providing a thrilling driving experience in the city streets and on weekends on the road.

With the last Ford Focus entering the sunset, it is down to the Blue Oval to electrify the car and its future intentions of the Saarlouis plant that will see the company possibly regain the market it previously held in the compact car segment. At the same time, the story about the Ford Focus stops in a silent location on a German floor, yet its contribution to the world of automotive culture will be remembered for many years to come.

Mercedes-Benz is making another significant move in terms of its electrification roadmap by commencing pre-series production of the much-awaited electric VLE van. The new model will be produced in Spain at the Vitoria plant, where the brand’s range of commercial vans, such as the V-Class, Vito, and eVito, is produced.

The VLE is an important landmark in the history of Mercedes-Benz, as it is the first car to introduce the new modular system as well as being the first van to use the new MB.OS operating system. Though the specifications are still under wraps, the initial news leaks suggest that the VLE will seat up to eight passengers. This makes it an attractive alternative to the fleet operators and small businesses that are looking for an all-electric, all-purpose transport option.

The pre-series production that started at the end of last month is the final step to complete the manufacturing process and check the performance and reliability of the vehicle before its official launch. Another impressive feature of the VLE is its testing record: during one of the last endurance tests, the electric van covered over 1,000 kilometers in 13 hours – demonstrating its long-range potential and powerful drive. These performance values make the VLE a stiff competitor in the growing European light commercial van market.

Mercedes-Benz will roll VLE out at the beginning of 2026, and the world premiere will occur in the first half of the year. This will be accompanied by the wider electrifying commercial transport push by the brand in order to take up a market share in an industry that is increasingly concerned with sustainability and efficiency in its operations.

With the automotive environment turning greener, the introduction of the VLE will be a turning point in the life of Mercedes-Benz. The electric VLE will transform the commercial van expectations across the globe by integrating a superior platform structure, modern operating systems, and long-range capabilities that are confirmed.

WOLFSBURG, Germany: Volkswagen has delayed the release of its first all-electric Golf. An internal cost scrutiny in the core of its production system has caused the automaker to delay its release of the compact-car brand, which is part of its compact-car strategy.

A series of new-media announcements states that VW has resolved to postpone the launch of the next generation of the Golf, the Golf 9, by about 9 months. The case revolves around the fact that the retooling of the Wolfsburg plant, the flagship factory owned by the company, towards the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs) would be expensive. Although the delay may appear as a minor adjustment in the schedule, it comes as an indicator of a larger re-evaluation of the approach to the implementation of an electrified future at VW.

A Timing Tussle

Golf 9 was initially planned to be released on the road in 2029, which is the first all-electric version of the model. This schedule was put in the background of an already existing combustion-engine (ICE) Golf that is likely to remain in production until the mid-next decade. In the meantime, there were plans to move the production of the ICE Golf to a factory in Mexico starting in the year 2027, leaving the production plant at Wolfsburg to concentrate on electrification.

The delay has already hurt the launch plans with the arrival of the Golf 9 that is only four years away, according to sources knowledgeable about the discussion and who requested anonymity. The new launch date has shifted to late 2029 or early 2030, further shifting when the compact-size brand is to be electrified.

Cost‑Control at Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg Volkswagen Plant, Germany (image credits: wolfsburg.de)

The very essence of the delay lies in the cost issues of re-equipping the Wolfsburg plant, which can be regarded as the key figure in the VW production chain. Whereas the brand has been building its electric-vehicle capacities over the recent years, the logistics and financial expense to move a complete line of ICE cars into battery-powered automobiles can be astounding.

The process of re-outfitting a plant of that size does not simply entail new machinery but constitutes a massive redesign of assembly lines, safety measures, and changes to the supply chain, as the senior VW engineer interviewed by the press put it. The financial cost of it is huge, to say the least, considering the opportunity cost of the constrained production during the transition.

The production difficulties with retooling are enhanced by recent equipment breakdowns at Wolfsburg. Cases have been reported of constant downtime that has caused assembly-line shutdowns, which have stalled production at a rate that can reduce output by about 1,000 vehicles per week until the end of the year. These technical hiccups have only added pressure to the budgets of the company.

The move that delayed the electric Golf has created a domino effect. Among the most direct ones is the delay in the relocation of the current-generation Golf to Mexico. As a shift was planned to occur in 2027 to release Wolfsburg to become electrified, the new schedule now delays the shift, constraining the production schedule of VW in various models.

Besides, the release of the electric VW T-Roc has been postponed as well. A smaller SUV, the T-Roc, which has been a successful model in recent years, is to receive an all-electric model in the near future. This roadmap shows that the electrification implementation at VW may be centralized in a way that it falls in line with the capacities of the plant and cost organization.

A New Budget Blueprint

To overcome these obstacles, Volkswagen is currently preparing a new budget plan that will be used to run its business between 2026 and 2030. The blueprint is likely to map out updated capital allocation on electrification projects and plans on how production throughput should be managed due to the problems of equipment reliability.

A spokesperson of VW said that it is re-evaluating its entire investment strategy within the next five years. It aims at making our electrification roadmap financially sustainable as well as aligned with our long-term production objectives.

Industry Reactions

The automotive industry is following with bated breath. Analysts point to the fact that the delay on the part of VW may change the competitive dynamics within the compact-car market, as competitors such as Hyundai, Kia, and Skoda speed up with electric cars. In the meantime, battery components and high-voltage electronics suppliers are expected to spill over the impact of a delayed launch, as demand for their products may not rise until the new timeline is solidified.

Such delays do not occur in isolation within the EV change. The trick will be to continue the momentum of the same since VW has less than a year before the targets of the 2030 Paris Climate Agreement take effect.

Looking Ahead

Although the wait of nine months can be disappointing to those who are excited to witness an electric Golf, it will also give Volkswagen some time to figure out its production approach so that when the new model comes about, it is accompanied by the quality and performance that this brand has earned. The difficulty is now on the cost factor and the need to hasten the process of electrification, and how to strike a balance between the two, a balancing process that will set the stage for the next chapter in the long history of the Golf.

With Volkswagen still walking the fine line of plant retooling, budget planning, and supply-chain management, the automotive world will be keen to know whether the brand will be able to transform such delays into a better and more sustainable launch of its future-proofed Golf.

In one of the most exciting car markets globally, Renault Group is speeding up its expansion in India. The Renault Group has taken over 51% of the Chennai plant, which was formerly held by Nissan, as part of its goal to turn India into an important global hub. Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (“RNAIPL”), a joint venture plant in Chennai, is now wholly owned by the Group after it bought out 51% of Nissan’s shares.

This merger is a part of a larger strategy that also included the new Renault Triber and the opening of the Renault Group’s biggest design facility outside of France in April. Specifically for the Indian market, this vehicle can accommodate up to seven passengers. This rapidly expanding market will see the release of four new models in the near future.

More than half of the population is under the age of 28, making this a promising market for Renault to accelerate its expansion in accordance with its “International Game Plan 2027” strategy plan. Already, the Indian market is the world’s third biggest for automobiles. In this new setting, the partnership with Nissan will go on. To be more specific, RNAIPL will keep making Nissan models according to schedule.

“Over the last 14 years, we have been able to consolidate Renault’s presence in India, thanks to our research and development, reaching over 100,000 vehicles sold. Stéphane Deblaise, with his vast international experience and knowledge of the entire value chain, is ideally positioned to design and implement our strategy in the region,” said François Provost, the new CEO of Renault Group.

Both Mercedes and Audi have just announced intentions to manufacture gas-powered automobiles for a long time. The Stuttgart-based carmaker’s CEO, Ola Källenius, said that staying with internal combustion engines for longer than anticipated was a “course correction” that was necessary. Simply said, the company has previously stated its intention to transition to electric vehicles “where market conditions allow” beginning in 2030.

A statement made by the chairman and chief executive officer of Mercedes was made in an interview with the German journal Auto Motor und Sport. He said that “electrified high-tech combustion engines will run longer than we initially expected.” In light of the unexpectedly delayed adoption of electric vehicles, he suggested a dual gas-and-electric approach as the best course of action: “Given the current state of affairs, I believe the best course of action would be for a well-established manufacturer to execute both tasks without ignoring either technology.” He did not name a specific date, but he did suggest that this would be the best course of action.

Quite erroneously, multiple individuals associate the EV industry in general with a decrease as promising EV sales targets established by auto companies are being relinquished by them. Though certain companies are experiencing the problem, such as the case with Mercedes, which reported a 23 percent fall in 2024, the industry as a whole is experiencing growth. The International Energy Agency reported sales of electric cars went up by more than 25 percent to 17 million units in 2017.

It is not only that, but according to the annual Electric Vehicle Outlook released by BloombergNEF yesterday, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle sales will rise 25 percent this year compared to 2024 to just over 22 million units. It is expected that most, or nearly two-thirds, of the PHEV and EV sales are going to be realized in China, according to the same research.

China continues to be Mercedes’ most important market, much like its rivals, despite the fact that sales of combustion and electric vehicles fell by 7% to a total of 683,600 over the previous year. It is worth noting that Kallenius says that Chinese customers “do not simply use their cars to get from A to B.” It is also used by a great number of individuals as an extra living space. Possibly, this is the reason why the three-pointed star models that have been used in recent years have depended so heavily on displays.

Until the 2030s, the three most prestigious German automakers will keep offering a range of combustion and electric vehicles to satisfy customers’ needs. What will happen in nations that adhere to EU rules, which ban car companies from selling new cars with dangerous pollution emissions starting in the middle of the next decade, is still up in the air. Although the European Union is not backing down from its stance, some automakers may be hoping for a postponement of the ban.

Porsche has officially said farewell to internal combustion models of the popular 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster. This fall, the cherished roadsters will conclude their existing generation, ending a chapter in the history of sports car fans.

Since they were introduced in 2016, the 718 Cayman and Boxster have earned a reputation for their speed and enjoyable driving. Since it all began at the Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen, 2022 saw a transfer of some production activities to the plant in Osnabrück. Both models were sold fewer in Europe last year as their marketing switched to being aimed only at Asian and American customers.

According to Frank Wiesmann, the last examples of the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster will leave the plant in October. As a result, their production cycle ends on a high note, with continuous noteworthy mixes of sports features and usefulness.

Porsche saw sales of 23,670 Boxster and Cayman cars in 2022, putting them at the top of most sports car fanatics’ lists. Still, as the industry focuses on sustainability, Porsche is readying these models for a new era with electric siblings. The shift toward electric vehicles is in line with what many industries are doing and what Porsche has always supported.

The new versions of the Cayman and Boxster will keep their historic place in sports cars and use the most advanced vehicle technology. Details about the electric models have not been revealed, but Porsche fans should look forward to changes in speed, fuel savings and handling that could surpass other sports cars.

Porsche is leaving its 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster behind with combustion engines, though it will continue its sports car heritage and help the industry switch to greener options. The last models of these car lines will both highlight Porsche’s engineering skills and help move the company forward in the field of electric sports cars.

One interesting example of having the effects of the new taxes is Volvo, the Swedish automotive company that recently began to transfer more of its production to the territory of the United States in response to the tariffs decided on by Trump’s administration. These taxes, which affect vehicles not assembled in the United States of America, have affected most car manufacturers, and this has included Volvo. Volvo has, however, been assembling cars in South Carolina, but it has only been assembling one model – the EX90 electric SUV. However, such a situation is set to change soon.

Volvo decided to locate a plant in the state of South Carolina, from where it will control its activities in the whole of America. The increase in company models is expected as Hakan Samuelsson plans to expand on how to produce more models locally. From the view of minimizing the impact of import tariffs in the United States, it is seen that Samuelsson’s vision is quite simple: to diversify the models produced in the U.S. Thus, Volvo is likely to change its approach and start concentrating, for example, on the production of such models as XC60, XC90. They both have mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid derivatives that are in sync with the current technology.

Thus, the decision of Volvo is determined by more factors than just tariffs. Another factor that affects their strategy is that at present, most car buyers in America prefer to purchase SUVs over sedans or station wagons. Samuelsson has no interest in the American car market’s sedans or station wagons, although he has realized that Americans are after SUVs. This insight is quite useful for Volvo as they determine the next course of action for manufacturing their automobiles.

In this regard, I opine that Volvo’s strategy is quite realistic and suitable for the current market trends. This decision not only resolves the tariff problem but also harnesses the rising tendency of being an SUV country. Furthermore, the ability to step down from the production and selling of the S90 sedan in America next year, due to the Chinese import nature of the firm, proves flexibility. By concentrating on its more successful models, such as the XC40, XC60, and XC90, the company might be able to stand up to these pressures from the outside economy.

A recent planned visit by Samuelsson to the U.S. to meet with the dealers also underlines Volvo’s management commitment to making rational decisions. Thus, only if Volvo takes input from those who are directly involved with sales would it be possible for the company to align its production strategy with what is likely to be successful in America.

Therefore, the expansion of the car production by Volvo in the U.S. is strategic and reasonable given the economic conditions and consumer patterns. Their preferred sector of automobiles to produce, which is SUVs, fits very well with what their consumers have been yearning for. This strategic move not only avoids the tariffs but also places Volvo in a much better competitive environment in America. I am interested in how this change is bound to occur and what its implications are likely to be for Volvo’s future in the US market.

Thus, the evolution of Volvo proves that versatility is the key factor in the present-day automobile manufacturing process. Volvo’s strategy shows how it is possible to adapt to the production needs and thus, economic changes within the industry.

The EU Commission has opened an investigation into the new car manufacturing plant by the Chinese firm BYD in Hungary. The focus of the probes is drawn by concerns on the possibility of the project having benefitted from subsidies outlawed under the laws of the European Union and hence gave an unfair inclination to the competition.

Chinese automaker BYD is currently in the process of rapid growth as a supplier of electric vehicles (EVs) and aims to further increase its sales in Europe. Building strategic objectives, BYD looks to forge a great market base on the continent. The company has specifically announced the construction of two plants in Hungary, Turkey, and possibly a third in Germany. It is the company’s strategy to start the production of cars in the European market this year, which will help it avoid the tariffs set by the EU on EVs from China.

As reported by Reuters, only its part relating to the factory in Hungary is at the center of the EC investigation, which may start manufacturing as early as 2025. This could further pose some risks where the company may be put at an increased risk of having its production capacity cut, forced to repay the given subsidies, and penalized.

Additionally, BYD has shown its strategic plan to start operating in Romania with three models, namely the Sealion 7, Seal U DM-i, and Atto 2. The type of models to be manufactured in Hungary is unknown but BYD’s plan shows that the company wants to open a campaign and capture a better market share in Europe.

In a remarkable strategic direction, BYD has proposed a plan to outcompete the Romanian manufacturer of cars, Dacia, within the next five financial years. This ambitious target proves BYD’s competitive advantage and the firm’s business model of expanding its market share in Europe.

Mr. Wang said BYD was the world’s biggest manufacturer of NEVs and that the company sold 4,272,145 electric cars and PHEVs last year. This puts the company ranking third in the world in automobile production The foregoing statistics exclude sales outside the year 2024. The case of the investigation undertaken by the European Commission on the Hungarian factory reveals the issues and legal issues that BYD encounters as it grows its operations. This investigation will continue to affect the strategic steps of BYD and its future plans in the European market.
